Breaking the silence

May 12th, 2008

Well, I’ve been quite quiet lately. I just updated to WP 2.5.1. Hooray?

Anyway, the silence has been largely due to exams which I finished last Thursday. Naturally I needed some time to relax and just not do anything for a while so I haven’t really said anything here, either. The other part of the reason for my inactivity is I just really haven’t had any good ideas for stuff to write about. I’m not a big fan of making these short, boring posts.

A minor update

April 27th, 2008

Well, I’ve written a small plugin that will allow you to use LaTeX in comments. To use this, put the code between $latex $. Right now it’s very basic, so you can’t use the $ sign within the LaTeX code (but I can’t imagine why you’d ever need to). If people don’t like the tags, I suppose I can change them. I picked these tags because those are what Xot tried to use in a comment earlier (which I deleted, so you can’t see it).

Anaclastic lenses

April 23rd, 2008

It all began as a daydream. I was bored in class and for some reason got to thinking of melting things (in particular this eraser I was playing with). I devised a contraption composed of a large parabolic reflector and a set of small lenses or other mirrors that would focus the light from the reflector into a death beam. But I realized that to get a high quality beam, I’d need a lens that would have no geometric aberrations (i.e. a convergent lens which focuses all rays parallel to its focal axis to the same point). There are two (simple) geometric cases I could consider here but I’ll only do one (something magic will happen to take care of the other).

Hello world!

April 14th, 2008

Well, I finally got off my lazy ass and did something with my website. The result is this shiny new WordPress blog. The change came about because I was tired of my site being all about Game Maker, since my interests lie elsewhere for the most part now. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not giving up Game Maker, I just wanted somewhere that allowed me to express my interests better.

I hope to be able to write about all the cool math things I do and the interesting problems I encounter as I study Aerospace (perhaps even partial homework solutions for my classmates).

That being said, for now you’ll all have to put up with the default theme for now. I may change it some day, but I’m no graphic designer, so screwing with layouts isn’t my idea of a good time. The next order of business is to see if I can get some kind of LaTeX plugin installed here.
